turtles and towels

turtles and towels

We’ve had some really great questions about the towels to be donated to Project 8. The Gulf Coast Oil Spill post has been updated with ‘frequently asked questions’ so you might be able to find some answers there. We’d love to encourage you to repurpose materials if at all possible. You can cut up old sheets, t-shirts, or towels to make the rags. Please do!

This is a photo of the oil covered turtles when The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies rescues them. So heartbreaking. Underneath the turtles are the towels used to transport the turtles and you can see they are incredibly dirty. Do not worry about the appearances of your towels and rags. They do not have to be pretty, they are saving the lives of dolphins and turtles and appearances do not matter.

While we can’t all go and cap the oil leak or clean it up with our bare hands, we can do little things that will make a big difference to our world. Thank you to everyone who has signed up to participate in Project 8. If you like to sign up, please leave a comment on this post.

Ok, so here’s another question. (Probably a dumb one!) Will any type of dish soap work, or do they specifically want Dawn? I’m thinking…less expensive soap=more soap I could send.

  • Domini says:

According to the International Bird Rescue site Dawn is the soap of choice. I assume the current Gulf rescuers are using it for the same reasons.

    Here’s their Q&A on that:

Q: What do you use to wash birds?

A: We use “Dawn” dish washing liquid. IBRRC has conducted research on most of the commonly available cleaning agents and “Dawn” meets all the criteria we have established for appropriate cleaning agents. Those criteria are the ability to remove most oils, effectiveness at low concentrations, non-irritating to the skin and eyes, rapid removal from feathers (rinsing), and is easily accessible. Procter and Gamble now donates all “Dawn” detergent to IBRRC and other rehabilitation organizations.

  • Hi Julia & Domini – Yes, Dawn is the soap of choice that is being used by the Gulf Coast rescuers, this is also the soap they have requested. Jade has posted a coupon in the Dawn Soap journal entry here on craft hope, if you’d like to download it and use it! Thanks for all you do! Blessings!

Hi! I added some photos of my cloth/towels to the Flickr group, and I’m working on a blog entry about the project. Do you mind if I use the photo of turtles from the site? I will happily give credit, link to Craft Hope, and post a link to my blog here when I am done. Thank you!

I’ve collected some towels&rags but I can’t find where to send them- please advise- and thanks for helping one feel a tiny bit less helpless in the face of such a devestating tragedy.

  • Kiera Casper says:

I can’t wait to help. I will be sending them in the name of the school where I teach. We have 100 misprinted t-shirts to cut up and send with some Dawn soap as well.
